Hello everyone!!
I hope everyone is doing well :)
I've come up with three themes for the February/March period to choose from:
Master Copies
This involves creating your own reproduction of the artwork of an artist whose work you look up to or want to learn from. Coping can be extremely helpful in developing one's own artistic vision and language by study and understanding the expression and choices of another artist. It can help you grasp how the artist creates meaning in their paintings and why they make certain stylistic or colour choices, developing understanding of core principles and an anchor to use to create your own original pieces
A master copy does NOT mean you have to create a traditional oil painting - You can use what ever medium and it's more about capturing the feeling of the original rather than matching every brushstroke completely. Additionally, you can reproduce art work made in any style or medium (I've done graphite master copies and enjoyed it thoroughly). You can choose any artist of any time period as long as you credit them.
Master copies may seem a bit boring but they can be very helpful and fun
Here is an example of a master copy I found online from James Hansen creating a reproduction of Bouguereau :
Vibrancy
Use vivid, strong, and intense colors that give an artwork a dynamic, energetic, and eye-catching feeling - Tips for improving vibrancy in pieces : toning the paper brightly beforehand and letting the underpainting shine through, exaggerating small differences through vibrancy, and using muted colours to make vibrant colours pop
Here's a beautiful piece by Erin Hanson for inspiration:
Science and Humanity
This is a more general theme - create artwork that explores the relationship between humanity and science e.g. a robot invasion!
I can't wait to see what everyone creates :D Just a reminder you do not need to follow these themes to post your work - anything and everything you create can be shared with the club
Kind regards,
Sophie
