Art Club Membership 2026

Hi Art Club!

As we're working on collecting a list of current active members for 2026, I'd like everyone to fill out this form please (attached below). It's just a short form; I just need to know who's interested in carrying on this year and who's not. This is also the form I'll be using for new members, so just ignore the bit about getting signed up.

If everyone could fill in the form by Tuesday, 17th February that would be great! If you can't manage that, all good, but please make sure you fill it out ASAP :)

-Emily

February/March Themes

Hi everyone! Welcome back to CGA Art Club for 2026. I'm very excited to be working with everyone as the new leader :)

As we're starting a new year and the Aoraki campus is settling into a new school life, the February/March submissions will be combined into one and we'll return to monthly themes in April.

The three themes for February/March will be...

  1. Artist study of Vincent van Gogh and his works

  2. People, limbs, and faces (drawings of humans)

  3. Animals, big and small

January themes

I drew a whale floating inside a dark blue night sky. I wanted it to feel calm and peaceful, like a quiet moment at night where everything is still and gentle. The soft blues and stars give it a dreamy feeling, as if the whale is safe and free in the night.

Jan Submission

Here is my submission for the January theme of night, painting the moon in its more vibrant colours not observable to the human eye. Often called a "Mineral Moon", the deep blues are given off by titanium oxides found in lunar seas and plains, and the oranges/red areas are rich in iron oxides.

Wow!! This is a really interesting and unexpected interpretation of this month's theme. I think you did a really great job keeping the vibrancy of both the blue and orange (this can be hard to control with watercolour without creating a muddy puddle on the page).

I also find the use of a white background interesting, even if it wasn't purposeful, it lends to the discussion of human perception your piece evokes; it's like the viewer has some capability beyond human eyes to see lightness in the dark night sky. On a more technical level, it allows the moons features themselves to stand out from the page rather than creating focus on their lightness in comparison to darkness which may be created if you used a darker background - I remember reading somewhere that when something is surrounded in black it draws our eyes to the outline/silhouette of the shape so by making the background white we get to appreciate the beautiful unseen colours of the moon to a greater extent :D

Anyways, sorry for the tangent, but this is overall a great execution of an interesting concept.

January Monthly Themes and Announcement: Looking for a new club leader

Happy 2026 Art Club!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holidays and New Years! I decided to go easy on everyone this month as a little gift so the themes are quite simple this time (you can see them in the attached file). I also have a bittersweet announcement to make; I'm finishing with CGA very soon so will not be able to run the club for much longer and am looking for someone willing to takeover the club! I have loved running the club since last year and I'm going to miss seeing all the beautiful art everyone makes, but I'm sure whoever leads the club after me will do an amazing job!!

If you are interested in a leadership position in the Art Club please contact me on teams or on my personal email for further communication! I'll wait until the end of Jan to hand over the…

December Monthly Submission

Hello everyone! This is a bit late but oh well😅

Here is an oil painting i created based on the childhood memories prompt! Its a painting of the black swans outside a clock shop which was my favourite place to go to as a kid. I recently got a refurbished old Cuckoo Clock gifted to me from that shop for Christmas by my Grandfather so I painted something (or things) that reminded me of it!!

I know the perspective is a little off but my main aim was to focus on colour (which is again is not showing up well on my 7 year-old potato phone) - If I were to paint this again id probably try to not change the composition as much from my reference photo like i did this time; it was a struggle to figure out the water without an actual reference :?

December Theme: Childhood Memories

Hi, I just wanted to share this work as it's one of the themes for this month. I used ink, colour pencils and oil pastels. I'd love to hear any things I can do to improve! Its a bit experimental as of with the child-like drawing of the background.

WOW!! This is so beautiful - I love the inclusion of both a more realistic style and a style reminiscent of childhood drawings. You've captured the bright feeling of childhood really well! One of my only suggestions is that the composition is a little heavy on side (specifically the right side with both the sun and butterfly); you could maybe work on balancing it out a bit. This could be done by shifting the balloon on the left to the right a bit to fit in the rule of thirds a bit more. But, other than that, this piece is really phenomenal with a lot of soul!!
